ESL Position (Volunteer) Rural Sri Lanka
In the post war world of Sri Lanka, there is hope to make a new start. This is the year of technology and English. People are ready and willing to learn what they hope will help them to make a better life for themselves.
"Success in English," a new company started by career-long international school teachers, means to bring modern teaching methods and reasonable, Web-based tools to small centers in the countryside.
What is needed now, however, is a coordinator/teacher with a native English accent to lead the first lessons and train other teachers.
SIE will provide the learning-teaching materials; they're in need of a native English-speaking teacher to spend 6 months to a year setting an example, writing lesson plans on how best to use the materials, and teaching other teachers.
Painfully aware that they cannot offer much financially, they can nevertheless promise the following:
- Paid airfare.
- Free room and board.
- A stipend for brief trips.
- A stipend for a monthly longer trip.
- Friendly, caring hosts.
- Knowledgeable, experienced teachers as colleagues.
- Lots of insights into Sri Lankan learning styles.
- A beautful, tropical country.
Success in English is seeking someone who has
- a college-university level degree.
- an open mind.
- patience.
- a strong desire to do a good job.
- the ability to compromise.
- diplomatic tact.
- the ability to listen well.
- the ability to teach when it's important.
- the ability to guage what's important according to group/community moods.
- excitement about learning.
- love of different kinds of food!
It would also be good to have
- experience living in a foreign culture.
- some understanding of Buddhism and Sri Lankan history.
